Sweet Leaf text behind Hilary signing the cover of the Black Sabbath song.

Bellwether Ritual Covers Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” at Musikfest 2025

When Bellwether Ritual took the Highmark Blue Shield Community Stage at Musikfest 2025, the crowd was ready for the band’s signature Doom-Wop originals. What they didn’t expect was a bone-rattling, smoke-filled detour into Black Sabbath’s 1971 classic Sweet Leaf.”

The set followed performances by The Black Crowes and Rubix Kube, but Bellwether Ritual wasted no time carving out their own heavy footprint on the festival. Halfway through their set, the unmistakable coughing intro to “Sweet Leaf” roared through the PA, instantly turning heads and pulling the crowd closer.

Hillary Takes the Mic

For this special moment, bassist Hilary stepped out from her usual backing role and took full command of the lead vocals. Her performance was raw and commanding—infusing Ozzy’s psychedelic praise of the “sweet leaf” with a smoky, soulful grit all her own. With her Sandberg 48 bass still slung across her shoulder, she locked in with Brenton’s thundering drums and Mike’s sludgy guitar riffs, channeling Sabbath’s heavy groove through Bellwether Ritual’s unique Doom-Wop lens.

“I’ve always loved ‘Sweet Leaf’—it’s hypnotic, heavy, and just a little unhinged,” Hillary said after the set. “Musikfest felt like the perfect place to let it rip.”

Doom Meets Doo-Wop

Bellwether Ritual didn’t simply replicate the original—they transformed it. The guitar tone was thick and fuzzed-out, the tempo slightly slowed for extra weight, and the harmonies slipped in subtle doo-wop-inspired intervals that gave the cover a spectral, dreamlike edge. It was a respectful nod to Sabbath’s influence while still undeniably Bellwether Ritual.

The crowd’s reaction was immediate—hands in the air, heads nodding in unison, and a few knowing grins from long-time Sabbath fans who recognized the deep cut from the Master of Reality album.

A Festival Highlight

For many, this surprise cover became one of the standout moments of Musikfest 2025. After the last distorted chord faded, Hillary thanked the audience with a grin and the band dove back into their original setlist, which included crowd favorites like “Brick by Brick” and “Lock and Key.”

In a festival packed with incredible performances, Bellwether Ritual’s “Sweet Leaf” cover proved that paying homage to your influences doesn’t mean playing it safe—it means reimagining the music that shaped you and making it your own.

If you missed it, the band has hinted they might bring “Sweet Leaf” back for select shows on their upcoming tour. Whether you’re a die-hard Sabbath fan or new to the Doom-Wop experience, it’s a performance worth catching live.
