actually have the here she came prepared I came prepared um we’re going to be at the gym um with her friend the redus and cicada safe space and then the very next day we’re going to be in York with some great bands and we’re actually headlighting that one so that’s going to be fun so the 24th and 25th we’re going to be playing shows we have all the all you need to know in our bio as far as like tickets and stuff so very cool yeah I haven’t seen anything about the gym yet but I heard it was really awesome yeah it looks cool like I was looking at the venue pictures and I was like wow okay yeah I’ve never been down there so now was Tau suggest yeah I love the gy so it’s close to our Halloween show we’re like let’s put on like costumes and then it’s like but it’s a really nice venue with a nice stage and yeah so maybe we should just like dress like you want pictures taken of us yeah yeah exactly yeah I know it’s funny it’s it’s kind of like a little bit bougie so for us to come in there and be like it’s gonna be interesting so yeah starting to rethink that one uh let’s see here I actually caught you um at the I think it was The Oddities um Market oh yeah oh yeah yeah yeah that was when I first heard of you and I was just there checking out the place because I’ve never seen it before and I thought it was an awesome event and you guys were awesome too and it’s like and luckily you said I think the name um of the band while you were playing so I was able to look it up oh nice find it yeah but uh how how that gig come about well we um were actually filling in for we from Antarctica oh yeah yeah they were supposed to do it but then one of the members got sick or something um and um there was something put on uh was it fuzzy cats story yeah like we just happened to see it yeah we like just refreshed when they posted it it was like if anybody if any band can do this slot tomorrow um and we had already planned to play at soals that evening for the LBG benefit yeah um so we’re like what the heck let’s add another set earlier in the day um and it turned out to be great because we met a lot of really cool people you know there were so many people there I’d also never been to it it was it was a really cool event so was there any like items uh did you did you buy anything or was it just uh I don’t remember wait I feel like I bought something you bought they had some cool jewelry yeah they had jewelry quite a few things yeah I think I got a necklace yeah oh I got oh I got a I got a um a pirate Medallion like sword like it’s like a mini sword that comes out of it hanging on my wall over there I got a scorpion sword yeah I saw things that were stand out oh it’s like a purse that was a frog you see that whoa I don’t remember seeing that there was so much going on there was a lot of Bones there a lot of like dead things a lot of dead things yeah yeah lot of preserved things yeah and then the um the woman on stilts like Denny long legs yeah she was she was walking around she awes yeah yeah she kind of hyped us up whenever we played yeah she got the she got the crowd going uh so are you all from the area originally who wants to start I’m from New Jersey which is kind of embarrassing because I don’t like so am I I don’t like sorry sorry I just don’t like New Jersey but yeah I’m not from the area but uh I I do live in Pennsylvania now I live a little bit away from Bethlehem yeah then what tosyl yeah I’m also from Jersey I’m from um like pretty close like 10 minutes from the PA border though so I’m like okay cool but yeah that way on the other side I’m originally from royford but when I was a kid we moved to Texas for 10 years and I moved back to the leehigh valley about a year ago so oh wow okay that’s interesting yeah so how was that like um just the difference between the two um it’s a big difference I mean not even just just weather and stuff like that like season wise um just like area wise as well um I’ve really been enjoying the valley I feel like I feel like a lot of people sleep on the Lehigh Valley for like bigger areas like Philly or whatever but there’s a lot here so I’m I’m having a fun time yeah it’s actually a good spot to be a band too because you’re right in the middle of like this super huge exactly yeah yeah yeah do you think about that when you’re like booking shows because you sounds like you’re trying to like put little like tours or runs together um I think about it a little bit um but we’re at this stage where we’re kind of just trying to get experience like pretty much wherever you know um but there are a lot of lot of cool places um like in the Philly suburbs that we’ve been finding so we’ll you know as if they’re going to have us we’ll be happy to play there but in Bethlehem there’s a lot of cool places as well it’s just a matter of you know um getting in there but we yep that’s like a an important yeah part of the whole thing see just want to say h thanks to Calvin thatw for joining Angel for joining um Calvin says yeah and Josh Burke thank you for joining on
Instagram holy C there some comments here oh
cool usually Instagram is where are people comment most so all right let’s see here what is can you remember is like a person in your family or was that a song on the radio or your friend like what was like one of the first things that you can remember that was like got you into music and set you off on that
path um well I know that i’ I’ve been playing music since I was like very small I was playing like recorder and piano and stuff when I was uh in first grade and um it was really my teacher who she was just like the generic music teacher at the school I was at but she really spoke to me um what I mean as much as you can speak to a seven-year-old but I was like I was I was really interested in music because of her her name is Mrs rerio um and she taught me uh she taught my brother to play the drums she taught me to play recorder flute piano saxophone all this stuff until I eventually found the bass and everything um but she’s still around she plays with the um she plays saxophone in the I think in the Easton Municipal Band um so shout out to her shout out to Liz that’s awesome and what was it about Bas that you kind of settled on or that you liked um well I I really wanted to play a music or a music play a an instrument that I could play in a rock band because uh my brother and I grew up listening to rock music through my dad like Foo Fighters Leonard skard Rush stuff like that um van hen and um wanted to play together I didn’t want to be like super generic and just learn to play guitar I wanted to do something a little more interesting what I thought was interesting uh and then we saw an ad in the paper for a bass teacher and I was like that’s really specific that I want this thing and there’s a base teacher in my town um and he was his name is Gary Van skak he’s the um he was John Lenin’s basist in his solo career um he’s are you learning this now Lear but he yeah he and he taught me bass until I got to college wow that’s awesome thanks yeah I love him he’s the best that’s awesome no wonder you’re cracked at base yeah exps a lot she did not tell us this just really quick too is there also a reason you wanted to like go like move to like more of rock band I know like flute I love the sound of flute but it’s one what I would really like about guitar and bass is you can accompany yourself you’re not oh yeah yeah yeah totally um yeah was there um guess so like we’re actively seeking to like join a rock band yeah I was I was really actively uh seeking to play with my brother because we listen to a lot of the same stuff want play together like I wanted to play the songs that I listen to and I can’t do that on a flute really
yeah tracks somebody else share their musical influence I don’t want you want to go next I don’t want to like take your Spotlight we’re talking about musical influences yeah uh just like yeah yeah oh well I was a dancer for 10 years um a tap dancer so that’s where the rhythm part comes from oh awesome yeah and then after that I I became a band kid percussionist I’ve been a percussionist for 12 years um and I did marching band for eight years drum I’m mostly influenced by marching band to be honest with you like that was my hyper fixation I I played n drum I was drum Captain um I’m actually very I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to set itself I’m like classically trained because question at College um so how was that transition like going you know honestly it’s it’s it’s better than I thought it was you know because I have like the natural feel for rhythm more of like now it’s about like learning to play more than just one drum that’s my but I’m improving a lot um as we play more and more and we learn new stuff and I try I start doing covers and stuff like I really love um the drum set Parts in a System of a Down songs I’ve been trying to learn that stuff oh my God so hard she sounds great yeah she’s [Laughter] amazing yes yeah um my like music goes way back I actually like was a Pianist for a really long time I taught myself piano as a kid and then I just started taking lessons when I was like a teenager um so very classical like training um and then my parents were very supportive and like if I ever was like I think I want to play the recorder they like would get me a recorder and I could like try out different instruments um so I dabbled in like violin a little bit and then um I did dabble in Guitar early on but I gave up actually I did I gave up because I couldn’t play power chords at first so I kind of just set guitar aside for a long time and then just one day I was like it can’t be that hard I must have been doing something wrong and I picked it up I I watched one YouTube video and I was like oh my my fingers were wrong so I can do this sometimes that’s all it is are are you like a do you use your pinky or do you use your ring finger um I use like the three like I use my pointer and then I use both the ring use both kind of like a lot because my my fingers aren’t strong enough to like bar it and yeah so I just do two anymore I don’t third what’s crazy about her though is she’s only been playing guitar like like playing guitar for a year oh W yeah I was gonna say so okay so like this is like when I’m 2 oneish and then I got really into um Nirvana because like how Kurt approached guitar like how like anyone can kind of do it you know like yes um it was really inspiring for me and I got really attached to the unplugged set and I learned like all of that in like a condensed time and then I was like I’m just going to do this now so um ever since then I’ve been practicing like crazy and um just trying to be like playing catch up a little bit because most guitarists have you know played for like five or six years or more so I still feel like a newbie but I’m really proud of like our songw writing I feel like it’s pretty good yeah um what was the first nirvan uh The Man Who Sold the World I yeah it just it just hit me and I kept hearing it like when I was out and I was like it was just one of those songs that you’re like this is a meant to be type of situation and it’s funny because that was while I was in Texas um so like I started started dabbling with it got obsessed with Nirvana and then when I moved here obviously I knew nobody um but I kept playing and I was like whatever if if something comes up I’ll join a band and then while I was working at a coffee shop there was a flyer um for lvg I don’t know if if you want to stop me you can because this is like how we all [Laughter] met that was my next question actually so you’re just going okay cool cool um so yeah it all kind of lined up perfectly so it was through lvdr um which is the Lehi Valley girls rock um and they have like an adult band camp type Vibe so it’s like called I think it’s called band Factory um you don’t need any experience you don’t have to be crazy good you can just sign up and they’ll pair you with people in a band and I was like okay I’ll try this you know um so I signed up they paired me with some amazing musicians Grace being one of them and we I was not the point tore is coming up next that’s also awesome um so after that was over we actually ended up winning crowd favorite and we won studio recording time which is why we have citizen down that’s it was through that that’s awesome thank you shards thank you shout outs shout Matt and shards yeah for sure yeah it was really a cool experience because it was our first time like together in a studio you know like with the song we wrote it was just really cool yeah um that’s so encouraging too like that’s great that you did that and started it because what happens right off like I know I was like what are the odds
like exactly and so then we kept Grace asked me and she was like at our last practice before like the show she was like you know I like you what if we just like kept playing together I was like okay sign me up um so then we we um kept writing kept playing um and then Grace was drumming at this point which is I don’t want to lose that part of the story because amazing she she learned how to drum and like what it was like I signed up for I signed up for band Factory and I said like like I I studi base but I’ll play anything yeah and then the group we were in nobody was willing to play drums so like I I would love to try it I had taken like a semester drum lessons and I’d seen my brother and that’s about it but um I yeah and it was it was real fun I like bought a little drum set off my friend um and we yeah we started but like obviously like I don’t know what I’m doing I was like if we want this to go somewhere we got to find like a good like a drummer that knows what they’re doing so we were we were not actively like we never posted like hey looking for a Jer but one day grace okay so I was in another band uh Stitch the sky and we were doing like uh emo night at um a bar in Ptown I was a guest singer T was our guest singer she sang A Paramore song paramor songs two paramor songs yeah um and then I was doing my little Instagram like what does this girl do and it was like you were like I’m a percussion major and I was like I wonder if she plays set and I quartered cornered her in the bar bathroom I was texting I was like I’m gonna do what I’m gonna ask her hey do you have G to play set and she’s like yeah I was like do you want to join my girl band she was like oh yeah and then that was it yeah because I actually I had my former girl band which never really be like became a thing it was like a starter thing it just fell apart only a short time before you asked me so when you asked like meant to be I was like that’s perfect that’s so funny yeah timing yeah it was just timing it was funny yeah very cool two things um T our drummer is a drum line drummer too like he’s so into that and he had the one with the multiple you know the the harness with the multiple Dr W yeah yeah so he still has those like stash an apartment so do something oh totally and uh the Nirvana thing I was um old enough to catch it the first time around and that is exactly what was the thing that made me pick up guitar too my friend brought a guitar over that he built with his friend he played come as you are right away I knew it I was like no way you can and then he taught it to me in like two minutes and then that was that was I think similar to the feeling you were talking about where it’s like I could do this like and then that was kind of Kurt’s message too was like yeah again it’s not doesn’t have to be super technical or anything and that’s like part of the beauty of I love their Noy like wild stuff yeah I like it because it’s also like messy like some of our songs now have gotten technical a little bit but they’re all messy like there it’s it’s a blend of like yeah a bunch of stuff y you got to know one to yeah use use which paintbrush or tooled or whatever you want to say but yeah I did get definitely catch like a A grunch vibe in a single for sure it brought me back so that was cool
yeah let’s see yeah and then um okay so we kind of got through the how had the band start um let’s see how important how long have you been together as a band well um band Factory was oh wait I have the poster like right here oh crazy wait what was the date um I know it was September
September it was November 17th was the day of the Showcase which is when we were um trauma response which was like our band Factory our first name but then lead pedal’s first gig was March it was St Patrick’s Day yeah at the other side yep um and that was ear so yeah so March I’ll say March is when our we like we yeah I think we officially renamed ourselves in February and then we started trying to get gigs that spring so we’re pretty we’re still pretty new yeah we’re very new we just got in um I want to say late April early June April April yeah April okay yeah so do you feel like you have like momentum and um I don’t know do you have what’s what’s your like goals or your next steps coming up I know you’re playing these shows you’re recording like how many songs do you have have uh for the recording um I think right now we have 10 10 tracks one of them is like an acoustic um so it’s gonna be pretty cool but there are songs we’ve written in this whole little time frame so I’m really excited to finally have them and listen to them and because we’ve been playing them for so long it feels like but yeah but when you step back it’s like it’s not that long it really isn’t it just feels long to me but well well I mean Bella wrote most of our if not all of our uh songs we do have one that um or two that are co-written by you and T um but like she has like she just would like send these demos on Soundcloud She’s like what do you think of this ref I’m like what where were you hiding this this like perfect yeah how do you know this without with only knowing guitar for a year like how can you I don’t know but it’s amazing it’s easy to write with them she as sounds me yeah they’re all they’re all very they all bring a very unique skill set to like when we practice so yeah like it’s just fun and so when I’m in that zone of just having fun like I’m just I just start playing some goofy riff and then I’m like wait this actually goes hard yeah that’s the best when you can just relax and have fun and there’s no pressure like that’s the best Stu comes out do you find when you’re writing is it like
um is do you some songs come quickly some take a long time or are you pretty consistent with how things are produced you know it really depends um on the song like sometimes I’ll be just doing random stuff and then all of a sudden I’ll just like have this riff idea run to like my phone or something and be like like just literally just like doing the notes like as if guitar um so I don’t forget it and then I’ll come back to it and make it into something or like sometimes I’ll have multiple memos that are random and I’ll just connect them and make it into like a cohesive song but other songs I’ll have I’ll Be Inspired lyric wise and I won’t have a riff and so I have to kind of like Sing the lyrics to myself until it makes sense it really depends but that’s a that’s a really good question when when me and Bella write together it also is it’s beautiful because our strengths complement each other’s weaknesses yes like we Bang Out songs like within a few hours and and yeah I’m pretty proud of the songs that we’ve created already same I always feel like the fast ones are the ones that are like TR the good ones because they just kind of happen and you don’t stay out of the way you don’t kind of Tinker with them just let them happen and then well I should say I always find well in my personal experience those are the ones the audience really likes the ones I really like are the ones we’ve like toiled over
exactly yeah like sometimes I would just or sometimes for me a lot of my Rifts are like emotion based so like if I’m like sad or like Angry I’ll just like take it out on the guitar and sometimes I’m like yep that’s it yeah and that’s so much more healthy than like all these other ways that people try to deal with that stuff so yeah I think that was part of like Nirvana and Kurt’s thing too like um just getting up there and like literally scream exactly yeah off getting it out
there all right let’s see here um what about like um oh I I know what I want to ask you how about stage Freight has anyone gotten to that point because I’ve suffered from that from a long long time so just curious um ever was it just like you were able to just step on stage in front of people or did you have like a struggle with that at all I uh well I went to um I went to college for music I studied music composition um and I my primary instrument was electric Basse but I also played upright and I like I feel like that really shot the stage fright out of me because I was like I was forced it’s like you’re performing in front of a lot of people multiple times a semester um and then like on top of that you’re learning to Gig and like um want to be in front of people so I like that really punched it out of me but like in high school for sure I was terrified um um where’ you go to just curious where’d you go to college I’m maravian yeah all right also and angels maravian graad too oh cool yeah I started in music but then switched to graph
arts for me when it comes to Stage Fright uh I only really I think feel like it’s like the buildup before a show that I start to get anxious but once they start playing it’s like funny yeah yeah I just feel more excited exactly but like the excitement can also become anxiety really totally yeah do you ever sometimes I find myself being like self-conscious or like overthinking about mistakes and stuff like that feel like that’s a big one too is learning to instantly let those things go because people can see it on your face oh definitely like for me as a girl as a female drummer like I feel like I have to like prove myself you know what I mean so that that is a that is a big thing okay um I don’t know I think and maybe this is where we uh get along a little bit more I’m much more on all been talking about like feel and like the emotion of it and um I took lessons all that kind of stuff but really when it comes down to it that’s really what I enjoy and to tap into that is a really important thing and I always find
um some people get to the point where they want like to put a lot of stuff in there and then get to a point where like now actually you want to take as much as you can out so you just leave the essence of the sign yeah yeah that’s always kind of like the battle yes so I like it’s simple a little bit sloppy and yeah like try to get the emotion yeah yeah I was never like the kid to perform like when I was little and I did ballet like I never did the recital like I I I had stage fright for a long time but the around the same time that like I started taking guitar seriously like I just I think it was postco my mindset changed I was like we only live once like you know we’re all gonna pass on one day it doesn’t matter nothing is that deep like yeah so even though like if it’s a big crowd or whatever I just feed off of the hype and like it just gets me like pumped up and I just like start acting a little crazy I don’t know so it kind of like makes the nerves go away and I don’t really care too much because I know people are focusing on the music not me so I’m just like I don’t know I’m just there have you um and then you get to to the point where I always say like you can get good at playing your instrument by yourself solo get good at playing an instrument with other musicians and then you have to get good at playing your instrument other musicians for an audience and ultimately like you want to play the audience ultimately right get them want to interact or just feel the dynamic of the the whole set u do you think about that at all when you write like uh I want to put a breakdown in the middle or i g to start like heavy and then we’ll build up and like Drop It Or that kind of stuff just to yeah yeah pretty much everything you listed we love we love all that um I know like T is always thinking of things like have the crowd you know say back to us yeah exactly we a lot of our songs I write so they have a catchy melody or a catchy chorus you know because like um I respect like all kinds of rock but some of it you don’t really come away remembering much from the songs themselves so I still want our songs to have that hook or something that you’re like singing to yourself later yeah um and so that’s one thing we try to incorporate is like somewhere for the crowd to remember and scream along or whatever you know just have a good time I love that I just talking before it’s like um that’s way more important than to like shred some kind to me to me anyway I shouldn’t say that but everyone’s got their thing but like I be dug trying to craft a good hook that you know people they wake up in the morning and that’s what they’re humming yeah like ultimately that’s what they’re gonna sing like they’re gonna either sing your melody or sing your lyrics they’re not going to sing your like shredded guitar solo unless you’re like the Eagles or something I know there might be some people out there who would try unless you’re a nerd like yeah I would like to see that actually a bunch of people try to do that it kind of happened I saw this at Music Fest um they played Bohemian rap city and everyone like ran in to sing it and everyone sang the solo as well they were [Music] like did you play a music festival or we just going as uh no not this year we did not play but fingers crossed yeah we’re thinking about we weren’t we weren’t exactly developed for time to even apply give it some time um did you see anyone um stand out uh I don’t really They Don’t Really book I think they’ll start booking more grunch bands too but I haven’t seen a whole lot necessarily yeah I the only like I I didn’t see many acts the only like original rock band that I saw was Drew and the blue which is like Drew and the blue oh okay yeah they’re like um what you call like rockabilly surf rock kind of stuff and they were really fun I’ve seen them before and I feel like they get better every time um but they’re always fun yeah I didn’t like go to many like local band stuff yeah yeah I saw a lot of I did staging actually so I I did see a lot of bands come through but a lot of them were cover bands which is fine but um I didn’t really see that many original bands um I wish I could have seen the big shabzi I’m like a huge Stan those guys great love them great but I know there’s a lot of the local stages I wasn’t really at I was at the bigger stages which was mostly covers so yeah
yeah see here how about um can you make talk a little bit about like social media and how that plays into band side of things like how much attention do you think band should pay to that or just in general how important are this to a band brand yeah I mean I think it’s it’s necessary in that like that that’s how we have gotten our gigs that’s how a lot of people get there that’s how you promote gigs now um so I think that it’s like it’s really useful in communicating shows like locations details everything it’s so nice but um I don’t know social media can get annoying you know nobody like wants to do it it’s more like necessary yeah it’s like a necessity yeah like in an Ideal World in my brain like we exist when records also exist but in reality you have to promote differently and a big part of that is social media and like being goofy people like that you know like and it’s who we are so you know what the heck yeah yeah it’s like another way that like personality shine too yeah we’re thinking of getting a Tik Tok to be yes so there was a debate I don’t I’m like I can’t like someone else wants to take it I know I deleted Tik Tok I also I couldn’t do it but I’m like if you guys want to do it me in charge I’ll do it that’s right like moments happen at practice that were like I wish someone was filming you know this is hilarious yeah we we like we’ve made a few short little videos of just like filming our practice and then Bella will like add silly little edits and its cute stuff and like we made we uh we got like our first batch of of stickers and we made this like silly little promo video where we’re like dancing and like throw them all them all around that would do so well on Tik Tok that’s
instam H yeah I agree it’s kind of that necessary evil thing and yeah uh so I’m just curious too like on the gear side um when you’re recording demos um are you like running into a computer how just just curious how you’re doing that I’m um most demos that I’m so I go through stages like I’ll write the song either with my amp and everything or on or on an acoustic it really depends and then I’ll go to garage band and just use my input yeah and then record it so they can put their parts on it like it it won’t have any bass it won’t it’ll have like a basic drum track that you can cringe at T um just something for them to like write over um that’s usually how they are or or we just record on voice memos and it’s literally all just crash symbol the entire time we’re like what was that song and then we go back and
it’s it’s like or I like it when I record it and then I go to show somebody I’m like check out this new song that we’re writing it’s so cool and then like the phone speakers just it’s just yeah I I promise it’s cool you just can’t you can’t hear listen really close yeah yeah uh T when you get a a drum track to like a guide track do you usually are you like all right let’s hear what it sounds like do you immediately scrap it and start with something else or I yeah well yeah well when I first came in they already had established songs so I kind of just did what Grace is already doing but for the newer stuff yeah I just scrapped the whole thing just I like the most recent two songs we kind of just like noodle around during rehearsal until I figure out something I like I usually set them to like super like dumb simple yeah you know hoping maybe he could get close and he just like exactly puts his own spin on it so it’s never the same though and but part partly why I love working with Tana is because like she brings so much of the drum line info to like writing so she she’s got that technique so she really makes the song Sound a thousand times better than just at four
feet would you ever consider pulling that orever do you I don’t even know do you pull that into the set at all um yeah like since I’m like classically trained in like the marching band whole thing um I’m really good with rudiments and like the technicality of stuff so I’m really good at like I guess Paran nles and you know all that kind of thing but it doesn’t help with like figuring out what order to do drums in the same time but yeah it definitely affects my style in a certain way like show
