Mike: [Music]
All right, there we are, and we are live! Happy Tuesday, happy live stream! You know how this goes — we’re going to give it a second for everyone to jump in and make sure we’re live on Instagram as well.
[Pauses]
Just give me a moment here to get that set up… okay, and we are live on Instagram. So, if you have comments, drop them on Instagram, and I’ll read them off, or you can also catch us on YouTube, Facebook, Twitch — all that good stuff!
Alright, here we go.
Hello and welcome to the Bellwether Ritual live stream, where we discuss music, the local Lehigh Valley PA scene, and beyond — especially today, bands, social media, and more! Today is Tuesday, October 8th. My name is Mike, and I’m the guitarist and vocalist for Bellwether Ritual. Hope you all had a great week! Just a reminder that we have shows coming up at the end of October, on the 25th and 27th, in New Hope and Spring City, Pennsylvania. Also, we have our website up at bellwetherritual.com, and please remember to like, follow, and subscribe if you like what we do here.
And a reminder to go out and support your local musicians — I know there are a bunch of shows this weekend! I should have had a list together to read off for you, but I’ll do that next time.
All right, tonight, our guest is Bobby Rayfield. Bobby is the owner of Inherent Records, a vinyl store and music label, and Monuments and Ruin, which is a music blog and website. He’s also a bass player with Kosa, a sludge and doom band, a solo artist as Earth Buer, and a contributor at the Doom Charts. We’ll talk about all that and more.
Welcome to the stream, Bobby! How are you doing?
Bobby: I’m doing good, man! Thank you for having me. Hearing the list read off is kind of neat, it’s certainly long.
Mike: [laughs] Yeah, it’s a lot! Just a few things going on there. Right off the top, is there anything you want to plug before we dive into all that? I know I just read a bunch about your projects, but go ahead!
Bobby: Yeah, definitely. If anyone’s in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, I’d like to promote Inherent Records, the record store that I curate. It’s inside Collective Clothing on Frasier Avenue. It’s basically all vinyl from me, and it’s a super great place. It’s like a thrift store, and we bring stuff in and stock there, so if you’re in the area, check it out.
Also, for anything online, go to Monuments and Ruin (monumentsandruin.com). That’s my catch-all — it started with Inherent Records as a label, which was an ambient label, and then that turned into a record store. After that, I realized I needed to separate the two, so everything’s now under Monuments and Ruin. It’s a blog, a Zine, and a place where you can find all things I’m working on. You can get records from us at InherentRecords.com too
Mike: [laughs] Right, and I forgot to mention, you’re from Tennessee, right? So that’s what I meant by “and beyond” earlier. I have some family down there too, so maybe at some point I’ll be able to get down and check out the store.
Bobby: Gotcha yeah cool
Mike: So, first question — are you originally from the area? Did you move to Tennessee, or were you born and raised there?
Bobby: Yeah, I’m one of the few in my family who was born and bred here in Tennessee. My family’s from all over, but they relocated here. I was the first child in my household, not the first in the lineage, but the first one born in Tennessee.
